Motto, Slogan and Creed

Junior NAD Motto

Promoting the tomorrow of all the Deaf by working with the Deaf youth of today.

Junior NAD Slogan

Joining nourishes adult development.

Junior NAD Creed

We believe:
That Junior NAD program is the outstanding textbook helper of the school;
That Ultimate educational goal is attainable through motivation;
That National competition and recognition promote maximum excellence;
That Initiative is the best vehicle for realization of maximum potential;
That Opportunity for total development are greater in group situations;
And that Resourcefulness and enthusiasm make a more complete deaf person.
That Never ceasing advocacy strengthens the position of the deaf community;
That Appreciation and respect for nature helps guide an adolescent into becoming a well-rounded leader;
And that Deaf people truly can do anything that they set their minds upon.

Junior NAD Logo

The first Junior NAD logo, which consisted of the NAD circle with the words “junior” across it, was introduced shortly after the founding of the organization in 1961. This logo was used to symbolize the organization on its official banner, chapter certificate, membership pin and stationery. A few years later, the small circular seal did not seem to fit the rapidly growing organization. Gary Olsen, a teacher at the Indiana School for the Deaf, created a new logo.

The Junior NAD seal was placed on a red, white, and blue shield. These colors represented the American flag, and symbolized all the Junior NAD chapters across the nation. Like the flag, the emblem has 13 stripes, but unlike the flag, the emblem has three stars. The stars signify the three objectives of the Junior NAD: developing scholarship, citizenship, and leadership qualities.

During the 1993-94 academic years, the Junior NAD logo was modified slightly, to make it more easily readable. The NAD logo circle was enlarged slightly, and the word “Junior” was moved from across the NAD logo circle, and placed under the three stars, where it remains today.

The Junior NAD Tree

Our future
Is Symbolized by an apple tree,
Very small and very young
Growing well, sprouting green leaves.
Not yet bearing fruit.
Have patience! Have patience!
Let it grow.
Feed it and feed it,
Help it and help it.

Let it grow
Through our tedious hours toiling
In our sweat and blood.

Before long we shall see a titanic tree,
With strong branches
Resembling generous hands.
Spreading out in the air mightily,
Covering the states of America
With its forthcoming ripe,
And numberless red fruit.

Through the help of our great Lord, our God,
The tree brings forth fruitful prosperity
It gladdens our faith, our hope.

Of the deaf people of America
We pledge the fruit of this tree
! e work of .the Jr. NAD.
