Types of Employment

Since CSDR is a State Operated Program, the employees are hired through the California State Civil Service system. (See “Civil Service”)

There are positions that are Exempt from the Civil Service hiring system and they are any instructional/teaching position or Student Aide positions at CSDR. (This does NOT include the classification of Teaching Assistant, which is a California State Civil Service classification.)

For Civil Services, check www.cde.ca.gov for the Department of Education Exams and Job Openings.

Instructional Services:

Instructional positions, such as Student Aides, Teachers, Teacher Specialists, and Supervising Teachers, are exempt from the California Civil Service System. What this means is that a person does not have to take a Civil Service exam and be on a Civil Service list for the position of teacher. The instructional staff at CSDR are members of the Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS), receive health, dental, and vision benefit options.Teachers work a 184-day school year, Teacher Specialist positions work a 194-day school year, and Supervising Teacher positions work a 204-day school year. In order to apply for an instructional opening at CSDR, the qualifications listed in the job announcement must be met, an instructional employment application must be filled out, signed and sent to the address listed in the announcement for the job.

See “Employee Application” and “Teacher Salary”.

Civil Services:

The California State Civil Service system requires that a person take an examination for the Civil Service classification they are interested in obtaining. The State scores the examination and ranks all participants.

When CSDR has an opening, applications may be accepted from anyone who is on the list for the classification, any person who is currently working for the State of California in that classification, or any person who is working for the State and can lateral transfer into that classification. In order to lateral transfer the person still has to meet the minimum qualifications and be able to perform the job duties of that classification.

The California State Personnel Board’s (SPB) web site www.spb.ca.gov provides a Civil Service application and exams that are presently being given. Exams.spb.ca.gov is a web site for on-line exams provided by the State Personnel Board.
