Audiology Services

The audiology program provides both diagnostic and rehabilitative services to all students and staff at the California School for the Deaf, Riverside (CSDR). In the area of audiological testing, the school provides complete audiological evaluation to all students on a triennial basis. In addition, students, staff and parents can request an update of any student’s most recent testing. Testing includes a complete audiogram and, when appropriate, an assessment of middle ear function and/or hearing aid benefit. Because our population includes very young children and children with special needs, visual reinforcement audiometry equipment is available. A sound treated room is required in order to insure valid testing. Test results determine a student’s eligibility for a variety of State and Federal programs in addition to determining eligibility for attendance at CSDR. More than three hundred students will receive testing of some kind each school year. Copies of test results and reports are also housed in the audiology office.

The audiology program houses and manages the loaner hearing aid program at CSDR. Currently, the program includes 85 loaner hearing aids. These instruments are assigned to students on both a short and long term basis. Donated hearing aids are also maintained for students as both loaners, and as permanent assignments. A lost and found center is also located in the audiology office. The audiology program also checks and repairs the personal amplification systems of students and staff at CSDR. Student’s hearing aids are checked, repaired in the office, or sent for factory repair from the audiology office. This service requires the storage of packing materials, tools, and replacement part, as well as supplies to allow students to maximize the service of their hearing aids. The audiology department stores and maintains an adequate supply of batteries for hearing aid users on campus.

Budget permitting, the audiology program provides earmold services to students at no charge and to staff at low cost. The earmold program involves both making of the molds, which requires equipment and supplies, and servicing the molds, which also requires supplies and equipment/ machinery. Earmold making also includes shipping and handling of impressions, which involves storage of mailing supplies.
